Celebrity Infinity vs Mercury?

I am considering taking a Celebrity Mexican Riviera cruise. The
Infinity and Mercury both leave on April 17. The cruise fare
(with single supplement) for a basic outside cabin on the Infinity
is $730 more than the Mercury. I know that the Infinity is a newer
and nicer ship. But is it worth $730 more than the Mercury?

Good question.

The differences between the ships...

Mercury has no specialty restaurant. If having one of those is important...
maybe yes.
Mercury has a retractable roof over the solarium pool and a separate
AquaSpa. Infinity combines the 2, without a retractable roof.
Food and service should be comparable other than the specialty rest.
Infinity has a better passenger/space ratio.

Is it worth $700 more? If it was $200... I'd say definitely. $700? I'm
not sure.

Probably not! I like the Mercury in a weird way. Kind of funky in a
"mod" kind of way. The coffee place is right on the atrium and great
people watching.

The Mercury is one of the older ships in the Celebrity fleet and is
often used for large group charters like Atlantis and Olivia. Unless
it's recently been to dry dock what this translates into is more ware
and tare on the ship. If you don't mind sailing on a ship that has seen
a lot of use, go for it. Sounds like a good price to me either way.

Actually, it's Infinity and the other Millie class ships that Atlantis
uses when they charter from Celebrity.

I prefer the "older" ships of the various cruise lines. They offer
what's most important to me (an ocean beyond the railings and windows)
at lower fares. The decor may be slightly blemished or outdated but the
vessels themselves are no less glorious than when they were launched.
It's the gimmicky areas of the ships (that rarely interest me) that
rapidly seem to lose the most luster.

I like both ships and I am very fond of the Mercury. I wouldn't pay
$730 more just to take the Infinity. You can always try the Infinity
at a later date when the price is better.

The Cova cafe is my favorite area on the Mercury. Great place to listen
to mellow music.

We did a California Coastal on the Mercury and have been on the Summit,
Infinity's sister ship, twice. My short answer is that I wouldn't
hesitate to go on either again, so for the price difference, I'd have no
problem whatsoever booking the Mercury.

The Infinity doesn't have a retractable roof or if they do, they never
opened it on our sailing. They did have windows in the roof that were
opened at times, but that is not the same thing.
