Cunard Ships Install Royal Red Mailboxes
To Whom It May Concern:
We came across this information in the trades and thought it would be of interest to this newsgroup as well. Happy sailing, John Sisker, SHIP-TO-SHORE CRUISE AGENCY® (714) 536-3850 or toll free at (800) 724-6644 & (pagoo ID: 714.536.3850) www.shiptoshorecruise.com Cunard Line has installed traditional bright red Royal Mail postboxes on the Queen Elizabeth 2 and Queen Mary 2. Passengers can post their mail in the boxes, which also serve as a reminder that Cunard was the first provider of transatlantic mail service between England and America. The postboxes recall Samuel Cunard's successful bid on the rights to the first transatlantic mail shipping contract. Winning the bid entitled his company, the British and North American Royal Mail Steam Packet Company (later known as Cunard Line), to use RMS, or Royal Mail Ship, as a prefix to the ships' names. On the Queen Mary 2, the newly installed postbox is located outside the Golden Lion Pub. Stamps, including an exclusive QM2 stamp available only onboard, can be purchased at the Pursers Desk. The ship's cancellation mark appears on mail dropped into the Royal Mail postbox. On the Queen Elizabeth 2, the Royal Mail postbox is located just outside the library on Quarter Deck.
