Is it possable to work your way home?

Hello,
I am looking for a cheep (or free) way to travel to America from
Europe.
I have heard that it is possible to work on a cargo ship in exchange
for passage. Does anyone know anything about this, or another way of
getting to America cheap?
I am not in any hurry to get there.

I would appreciate any info, or suggestions!
Thanks,
Ami

Departing from Switzerland, the shipping capital of Europe? 8-)

Seriously - if you can travel VERY light (carry on only), look into being an
air courier for a RELIABLE company (one of the majors). You give up your
checked baggage allowance for a cheap (sometimes free) ticket. If you can
travel on a moment's notice and aren't too picky on where on the continent
you land, this is probably your best go.
