i cant seem to guess what to put into
the google search engine. anyone here
know of ship travel to NZ that is NOT
on a cruise ship?

There are companies who do specialise in this type of travel however
be warned, it is not cheap.

The number of ships now doing this is decreasing as many new ships are
no longer being built with passenger facilities.

Don't rely on Google - use a search engine such as excite.com, ask.com
etc.
If you go to www.excite.com and type in freighter travel new zealand
it will bring up the above plus other links you may want to check out.
