Value and variety and I like the sea.

Value: meals, lodging, entertainment, no driving, no packing/unpacking every
day or so, freedom to do or not do what you want, even if you are with a
group.

Variety: Every day a different site to see, either a foreign port or the
open ocean on a sea day.

When I read sea stories as a youngster I always wondered what led men to a
life at sea. Some went out of economic necessity, but some acquired salt
water in their veins and wouldn't trade it for anything else.

Now I know that I am not a seaman. Just a silly tourist. But on a warm,
sunny sea day with a tropical breeze in my face, I get a little of the
feeling that this would be an interesting life.

2. just really enjoy reading on deck or balcony

3. value: all is included (I don't drink)

4. get to see new places without having to fly

The same reason I like trains - it minimizes the need to deal with airlines
and the airport messes.

And basically you hang up your clothes once and get to visit many places,
and as you're traveling you get to have nice meals, dance, go to shows etc.
Can you imagine doing the equivalent of a 12 day Baltic cruise with
airlines and checking in and out of hotels. Each Day's tour would be the
security process at the airport.

We do land touring too.

We only started cruising on big ships after it became too stressful
for us to cruise long distances on our own boat. Last time we did an
extensive winter trip, we ran aground in the middle of the channel on
the way home. While that wasn't unusual, this was the first time that
we ever had to call a tow boat in the eight years we had the boat.

The big ships have the advantage over our little boat of not needing
our input for cooking, cleaning, driving, or how to dock and undock.
We don't have to plan or worry about the wind or the weather.

Both kinds of boats (big and little) get us to places without flying
(I pick cruises that we can drive to because that is important - my
husband almost will not fly anymore) and without having to pack and
unpack (unlike most land touring).

Both land and sea travel let me tour various places, eat in local
restaurants and take pictures. Sometimes I get to swim or snorkel
too.

Our boat has the advantage that we can sail it (it is a sailboat)
which I like better although it is slower, and I also like that we are
not traveling in a crowd.

Both land and water methods of travel lack access to the internet
sometimes, and that's my primary means of communication. Since we
are retired, the idea of being isolated from phones and internet as
something relaxing does not apply to us. We already do what we want
to do when we want it and I find it a significant disadvantage not to
be able to use the internet when I'm traveling.

I agree with all the reasons already mentioned but have one more and it
is a biggie. No one on board is a stranger to me. I'll strike up a
conversation with anyone but only on the ship. "All in the same boat"
thinking.

OTOH - many people are now able to take more cruises because of the improved
communications available on a ship. Keeping up with business while on a
vacation may not be fun, but if the hour a day someone spends working means
they can spend the other 23 having a good vacation, it is a good trade-off.

We are old and cruising is the easiest way to travel. But it is also the
most civilized way. Comparing it to air travel...well, there really is
no comparison. Land touring is great when one wants to spend time in any
one place and gives one the chance to experience"the flavor" of that
place, but cruising can give one a small taste without the hassle of
packing and unpacking.

Well I look at it this way. Many of my relatives do all-inclusives and
their 7 day trip looks like this:

Day One
Travel to resort

Day Two
1. Get up early to hold beach chair with towel
2. Eat Breakfast
3. Lay on beach/swim/snorkel
4. Drink
5. Eat Lunch
6. Lay on beach/swim/snorkel
7. Drink
8. Eat Dinner
9. Drink a lot!
10. Go to bed

Day three, four, five, six
Repeat Day one

Day Seven
Return home

Now compare that with a 7 day cruise, with 4 different stops (5 if you
include the port of embarkation) and its a no-brainer. Cruise may be a
little more money but its like driving a Lexus versus a Kia in my books.

Anka,

Good question. For my wife Deborah and myself, once we experienced our first
cruise in 1986, we easily knew that answer. A cruise will cost about the
same as a comparable land-based vacation - but when your add everything up
(accommodations, flight, transfers, food, entertainment, shows, plus a
relaxing voyage to some of the most exotic ports in the world), with a
cruise, you get so much more. Plus, for the most part, you unpack and pack
only once.

Why do you cruise?

From our viewpoint as "experienced vacationers" and "fairly
newbie cruisers"...

If you compare a cruise vacation with a non-cruise vacation,
dollar-for-dollar, menu-for-menu, event-for-event, and add some
sort of stress and de-stress factor (what's a vacation for?),
the result to us is perfectly clear.

A balcony room on a middle-market (Princess, HAL, etc.) cruise
ship vacation, wisely selected, is a substantially more
cost-effective way to spend money. Other than the obvious
constant change of venue and the atmosphere of romance and
adventure, to us the biggest differences a

room size - but who "lives" in that room?
gambling loss - house advantage on ships is incredible
safety - ships are safer than streets of many vacation cities
food - you'll never eat better than on a cruise - period!
people - we make friends on a cruise, but in a hotel?
convenience - our advantage is that we can cruise from home, and
our son drives us to the dock. WOW!

We do a lot of land travel. We opt to cruise for three kinds of trips: (1)
coastline explorations that would be logistically challenging to achieve by
land, e.g., Alaska; (2) "big picture" trips, where taking a ship to get a
taste of an entire region is easier than covering the same territory by
land, e.g., the Med or the Baltics; and (3) vacations, i.e., trips that are
just for fun and relaxation. As for that third category--vacations--I've run
the numbers many times, and for our party of four, cruising is almost always
a far better value than any comparable land vacation. Consequently, I'd have
to say our #1 reason for choosing cruise vs. land vacations is bang for the
buck.

Having done both land tours and cruises (several times over) I think I
prefer the latter. Years ago (1989-1997), I did quite a few tours of
Europe with high school students as their chaperone. Believe me, I
couldn't do that today, but back then it was quite fun and a chance to
get away for a week or so. The tours were all of the If-It's-Tuesday-
This-Must-Be-Belgium ilk, but the experiences, cities, sights and
company were fantastic.

The reason I initially asked the question is this: I read an awful lot
of posts that deal with the quality/quantity of food on various ships,
but not many that describe the ports-of-call. Maybe I missed
those... My one *huge* beef (pardon the food pun) about my upcoming
cruise is that we'll have five days at sea, which is too many for me,
and not enough time in the ports.

One of the best cruises that I've taken was on a dump of a ship, our
cabin vintage 1950s with a bathroom the size of a closet. The
entertainment couldn't compare to our local high school's musicals.
The food was just okay. But the Adriatic ports-of-call were
unbelievably beautiful and for the most part, our ship was docked for
the entire day. We came and went at leisure. I wouldn't have traded
that cruise for the glitziest Las Vegas-type floor show or the
grandest of midnight buffets.

That is a great reason that I had not thought of. and might not be
evident to anyone who had never cruised. Just to add to your
thought----you get to meet both people from all around the world plus

In the beginning, I enjoyed being at sea and I liked exploring the
ports. After 50-something cruises, I enjoy relaxing on the ship and
watching the water go by. No cooking, dish washing, telephone, door
bell, laundry or anything else to get in the way of my relaxation. No
other vacation can beat cruising, IMO.

Yes! I do cruise! I cruise for the same reason I fly: to get to a
destination that is (hopefully) full of history and culture and
interesting sights and friendly people. The days at sea, the onboard
entertainment, the art auctions sigh, the casinos, the dining are
all secondary.

That is a great reason that I had not thought of. and might not be
evident to anyone who had never cruised. Just to add to your
thought----you get to meet both people from all around the world plus
from familiar places. As an example---on our last cruise we met several
people from Australia and I met someone originally from my home town
(his late father had been the Superintendent of the school at my wife's
first teaching job) and someone who graduated from the same college as
me only one year later.

Why do you cruise?

Ok, this time you do have a "legitimate" complaint. Please excuse my poor
spell check choice, and of course my mild dyslexia doesn't help. However,
this does not change the reason why I cruise, just the fact that I need to
re-read my posts a bit better.

Why do you cruise?

What is your #1 reason for cruising, as opposed to land touring?

We do a lot of land travel.

Same here, although its worth saying "more land travel than cruising".

We opt to cruise for three kinds of trips: (1) coastline explorations
that would be logistically challenging to achieve by land,
e.g., Alaska;

and e.g., Galapagos.

This is the #1 reason for us as well, and it should be pointed out
that cost is not really a factor - its the "impossible becomes
possible".

(2) "big picture" trips, where taking a ship to get a taste of an
entire region is easier than covering the same territory by
land, e.g., the Med or the Baltics;

e.g., Hawaiian islands, French Polynesia, etc.

This is a consideration too, particularly in light of the alternative
of packing and moving every ~2 days. Nevertheless, it can depend on
how it is done and what the trip's purpose is: it clearly works for
the "big picture", but doesn't necessarily make the grade when the
activity of interest is more land-intensive, such as hiking, snow
skiiing, etc.

(3) vacations, i.e., trips that are just for fun and relaxation.
As for that third category--vacations--I've run the numbers
many times, and for our party of four, cruising is almost
always a far better value than any comparable land vacation.
Consequently, I'd have to say our #1 reason for choosing
cruise vs. land vacations is bang for the buck.

Generally, the comparison of costs isn't a factor at all for us at
all. I don't dispute that cruises are highly affordable, and while I
enjoy spending some time on a teak deck, I find that I also enjoy
nighttime solitude and silence (not unlike the "Rose is Rose" comics
character, Jimbo Gumbo, who enjoys gazing up at the stars when taking
out the trash at night).

Case in point: http://preview.tinyurl.com/2smpqy
(Can't ever see the stars shine like this down at sea level).
