If you are into Scuba diving, try any of the dive shops on the Ganges in the
old part of town.

This poster is joking. I have never heard of diving in the Ganges and
the water has been tested there and found to have a huge amount of the
E. coli bacteria because of the raw waste that is put into it.

Finding a hotel that is not a rip-off there can be hard.

one good one is the Vishnu Guest House, but many guest house give
themselves similar names to trade on the fame of this one. It is right
at the top of the ghats, looking out on the river, and has a vishnu
temple on the premises.

dont trust your rick shaw man to take you there because he will not
want to go through the narrow streets and he will take you to a copy-
cat vishnu hotel.

another good place is Sunshine guest house, lower down in the poorer
section of town, just at the top of the steps that lead down to the
place where outcasts are cremated.

The problem is having contacts with them! Oftenly even by telephone it is
impossible to comunicate with any of them! :-(
Anyway you're very kind, thanks for your suggestions.

Giumak

for varanasi, you do not need to bother making reservations,
especially with the cheaper guest houses.

just take a guide book, like Rough Guide,

and pick a 1, 2, and 3 choice.

then just go there and you will get something.

even if you dont get what you want you can get something that is ok

Thank you Sarp!
Someone told me that in Varanasi it could be important finding a room not so
faraway from the Ganges.
I'll do it locally, as you suggested.

Namastè

I know few hotels in Varanasi, have a look

Hotel Siddharth (3 star)
In Sigra Area

Hotel Surya (3 star)
Address: S 20/51, A-5, The Mall Road Varuna Bridge

Hotel Hindustan International (5 star)
Address: C-21/3, Maldahiya

I'm not sure whether these hotels fit with your needs. I would suggest you to check some travel websites like Wego Hotels to see the hotels lists along with the pricing and rooms range.

Giumak! Varansi is the nice place which attracts the lots of people because there you can see lots of temples and other religious places. I visited it last year and during my trip I stayed at the "Hotel Rivatas by Ideal". According to me it is the best option for you because it has ideal location and all basic facilities. It is a little bit expensive than others but did not very much.
