http://www.sutherlandinfo.co.za
Gateway to the universe ....... that is what they call Sutherland. Land of snow and stars. The coldest place in South Africa. The place where you find the largest telescope in the Southern Hemisphere....... a telescope so powerful that one could see a candle flame on the moon. When you take the tar road from Cape Town , you turn off at Matjiesfontein, the famous English Karoo town with its splendid museum, then another 110 km and you reach Sutherland ..... not only famous for its Observatory but also for its pure , fresh air ... fresher than anywhere else in the world! SALT (Southern Africa Largest Telescope) is probably the most important reason for anyone to visit 'out of the way' Sutherland which is based in the heart of the Karoo (semi desert) in South Africa. The Great Paleo surface at Fraserburg is another good reason to visit Sutherland as are the very rare species of flora which are found in the area. Here too can be found South Africa's only Sheep Milk Cheese operation and the country's leading horse farms. Jurg and Rita Wagener invite you to the warm family atmosphere of the Kambrokind Guest House from which you can explore the entire district at your leisure.
