What's Up WIth Going-to-the-Sun Road?
I've been checking the status site for GTTS road and it looks like no
progress has been made in four or five weeks in plowing it clear. Does anybody know what's going on? Larry |

If they say the road isn't open, believe them! Last year, we arrived
in Glacier NP in mid-June -- the road was open as far as the lodge. After that, completely closed because of rock and mud slides and snow accumulation. We drove in and out on the same road. Since we were going to the other side, we had to drive around 200 miles to the south and around -- very inconvenient. If we had realized the road would not be open in mid-June, we would have changed our route completely. Bad flood damage from last winter. They have to repair the road after
getting it plowed. Here's a link to an early May article. http://dailyinterlake.com/articles/2...ews/news02.txt On May 31, 1:09 pm, Judy Heuman wrote: If they say the road isn't open, believe them! I really wanted to drive this famous route. Fortunately, the trip around the south of the park to the eastern entrance was also spectacular. So if anyone else is in this situation, bear this in mind. It makes for a longer day, sure, but it is a good day. -- Dan Stephenson http://stepheda.com Travel pages for Europe and the U.S.A. (and New Zealand too) |

The amount of time before they will need to change the name of the park to No Glaciers National Park is probably is not a lot, years, not decades, so anyone that hasn't been there yet should go as soon as possible. |

Maybe if the GTTS road is open, you could see more? Only on the eastern side near the end of the blockaded road, can you see a tiny glacier. Far in the distance. That looks like a snow drift. New Zealand and Norway are the best places to see glaciers! -- Dan Stephenson http://stepheda.com Travel pages for Europe and the U.S.A. (and New Zealand too) |
I absolutely capital to drive this acclaimed route. Fortunately, the cruise about the south of the esplanade to the eastern access was as well spectacular.

Right, I suppose it was named back when there were more glaciers. I saw one small glacier at the lookout spot at the end of the dayhike from Logan Pass. A beautiful hike! If you're into glaciers, Norway is the place for you. There are several glaciers you can approach quite closely, and many more you can see from the road, just driving around. The Southern Alps in New Zealand also has Fox and Franz Josef glaciers, where you can walk to the face of the glaciers.
