Trip to South Africa and Zimbabwe this past October: report and photos
 

This past October, I went on a 3 week trip to southern Africa. We
visited Kruger, the Klein Drakensberg, went caneoing down the Zambezi
River (Zimbabwe side), stayed at Musango camp on Lake Kariba, and
explored the Cape Town area for a few days.

The web and Usenet were very helpful in organizing the trip
(independent travel, not part of a tour group). In the spirit of
giving something back, I have posted photos and a few words on
logistics and arrangements at:

So did I. Remove the /africa part from the end of the URL and go to his
home page. Then click the link to his Africa trip.

There are some good pictures, although a few of them have incorrect titles.
I was interested because it has been quite a few years since I went to
Zimbabwe and I would like to go back some time, but am uncertain about
travel and safety conditions.

Sorry about the URL. It should have been

I've gone back and kluged it so even using the old URL should work via
a redirect.

Any title corrections appreciated (email, let's not clutter up
newsgroup) to the extent people feel it is worth it. I made notes, but
I rather expected to get around to organizing my photos sooner than 2
months later...

area) and when we went, there was no occasion at which we felt unsafe
or threatened. There were very few tourists, which actually made for
an excellent experience - basically an experienced, quality tourist
infrastructure thirsting for visitors. The people are suffering,
however, as a consequence of the systemic economic collapse.

Nous sommes alle en avion jusq'a Lusaka, et puis par auto (avec
chauffeur, arrange par l'agence de voyages) de Lusaka a Kariba - a peu
pres 3 1/2 heures. A cause des regulations d'essence et des
inspections aux frontieres, on etait content de ne pas falloir
conduire soi-memes.

De Kariba a Musango on a pris un petit avion (20 minutes). Les seuls
autres tourists que nous avons rencontres (sauf d'un medecin americain
en vacances, en train d'aller par bicyclette d'un cote de Zim a
l'autre...) sont venus en avion charter de Malawi jusq'a Kariba et
puis allaient aussi en avion a Victoria Falls. Plus cher,
certainement, mais ca gagne du temps. Enfin, on a passe un jour
complet en route au debut et a la fin de la visite au Zim.

Short translation: We flew in to Lusaka and had a car and driver take
us to Kariba. You can also fly by charter aircraft, which saves time.
