Standby Flights
 

I haven't seen any recent discussion on this, so I'd like to ask you
if they are COMPLETELY gone (except for buying a full price ticket and
trying for an earlier flight) or are there still airlines doing this?

There is probably one genuine standby fare somewhere in the world.
However, in general, airlines have moved to the "buy in advance to get the
cheapest(!) fare" model.

Westjet doesn't do true standby, but I've bought deeply discounted
tickets 12-36 hours in advance of the flight and paid their lowest rates
for the flight (typically in the $49 range)

As far as I know, this is about as close as you can get.

AirTran has standby for young adults in the 18-22 age range.
They can buy a ticket ( as much as 99 cost to coast one way) and
travel standby for that flight
If there is no seat available, they can stand by for another flight
anytime.

In most cases, you don't have to buy a full price ticket to standby for
an earlier flight.

The only time I have seen standby is when a flight is overbooked and
they create a list for passengers without confirmed seats........I'm
sure most airlines still have standby on some of their routes.
