Anyone visiting Aus during May and June should checkout the Virgin Blue and
Qantas airfares - $23 between most major centres. Total of 300,000 tickets

Just to be pedantic - fares are $29, and they're selling like hot cakes.
The fares are available on www.jetstar.com.au for the Qantas subsidiary and
www.virginblue.com.au for Virgin Blue.

Note that the seat pitch arrangements for Jetstar are extremely crappy, they
tried this dodge of cramming in seats in Europe and were howled down with
complaints from pasengers. Virgin Blue offers 3" greater seat pitch.

Also Jetstar are using Avalon as their Melbourne airport, which is probably
fine if you live between Werribee and Geelong, if you want to travel into
Melbourne you'll probably have to pay a fortune for shuttle transport.

THey intend to use Richmond for Sydney, again fine if you live in the
western suburbs but very inconveniently located if you want to go to central
Sydney.

Using Jetstar the trip between central Melbourne and central Sydney would
become a nightmare, at least 2 1/2 hours road travel, and crammed into
substandard seating. Think I'll stick with Virgin Blue

to make a booking, without giving any alternative for the special fares.
Virgin Blue don't impose this rip-off.

As I've booked tickets both ways between Sydney and the Sunshine Coast for
$29 just for a long weekend in May I'm willing to accept the Jetstar terms -
I note though their page says Sydney at T2, no mention of Richmond and that
the check in closes half an hour before takeoff with, apparently, no
exceptions for late arrivals.
If we go out for an evening it generally costs us more than that so to be
able to dodge in on friends is a bonus. Annie

Sheesh!! $29+ still not cheap enough!!

Price competition has proved fatal to smaller operators in Australia before.
Virgin Blue is now a separate corporate entity; listed on the Austr Stock
exchange. Qantas has the deeper pockets of the two!

They _do_ give an alternative - you can pay using direct deposit with
internet banking and there is no additional charge.

Skybus will run - $13 one way between Spencer Street Station and Avalon. $8
Geelong to Avalon. Only a handful of buses each day, but they should hook up
to the limited flights initially using the airport.

Also apparently a shuttle bus will run from Lara Station to Avalon, though
details sketchy so far. V/Line fare from Melbourne to Lara will probably be
similar to the Skybus fare.
