LF wedding cruise advice
 

Hi!

We are recently engaged and are looking to get married on a cruise ship if
possible. I would love to hear from anyone who has done this. Advice or
tips?

Also I would like to know if you guys advise going through a travel agent to
book our cruise or should we try to set it all up ourselves? There is just
us going (as far as I know) not family and friends so there aren't large
numbers of people to consider.

I have found a few web pages about Princess offering cruise weddings at sea,
and I have sent for a package from them but have not received it yet.

First, I would recommend using a travel agent. You already have enough to
do. Let the agent worry about the cruise. You, however, will have to work
with the cruise line on the details of the wedding itself.

You have basically 3 options. Most people choose to get married on board
before the ship departs. This is the easiest to arrange. You and your
guests get on board early, have the ceremony and reception, and then those
not sailing leave the ship.

The second option is to have the wedding at sea. This is a little more
complicated, and most of the time you have to bring the person who will
perform the ceremony.

The third option is to have the ceremony at one of the ports of call.
Although this can be the most romantic option, it is also the riskiest, as
bad weather can prevent you from landing where you planned the wedding.

perform the ceremony.

Contact a travel agent to arrange the cruise. The cruise line can also
arrange the details of the wedding. I saw this in Los Angeles where a
couple had the ceremony on the ship, and even drug their wedding party along
with them on the honeymoon! Personally, I want NO ONE from the wedding
party near my honeymoon, but that is my personal preference. You can also
get married in one of the ports of call, but this also poses some risks. If
there is bad weather, or a mechanical problem with the ship, your cruise
could be rerouted or even cancelled. You must comply with local laws
regarding weddings. For example, The Bahamas require that you be in country
at least a day for the ceremony to be legal. All the major cruise lines
have staffs that can help you make all the wedding arrangements, for a
fairly reasonable fee (at least as weddings go). On some ships in the
Princess fleet, the captain will perform some ceremonies with assistant
pursers performing the duty of ushers. This is unusual, because most
nations where the ships are registered prohibit the captain from performing
the ceremony.

I do have some personal advice. Try to have as much of both families
present as possable. I know this is YOUR wedding, but you are bringing a
new person into both families; he will be a part of yours, and you will be a
part of his family. This is a once-in-a-lifetime occurrence that no one
will ever forget. I don't mean to be preachy, and I understand if there are
difficulties in your family relationships, but do try to include them as
much as practical.

I third the opinion: Use a travel agent.

With the stipulation: Find someone you work with well, who really understands
what you need and will take responsibility for this part of your plans.

Angie;
as you might have heard, we had a wedding to kick off the first GGC -
way back in 1998.
I am the groom from that wedding, and can tell you that the easiest way
to arrange for a wedding on a cruise ship is through a wedding planner or
wedding consultant.
We used "A Wedding For You" out of Davies, Florida, and we highly
recommend them.

They are at http://www.aweddingforyou.com and provided everything we needed.
Which was great, because I was planning this wedding from Northern Canada -
over 5,000 km away!
