Orlando hotel questions
 

Since our 10th anniversary is coming up, I had been dreaming of a
short cruise getaway this year. Alas, since we already took a 1 week
cruise last year, our parents have started asking when we would take our
kids to Disney World. Our two oldest are ~8 years, and when I reflected
on this, I remembered that I first got to enjoy Disney World at about
age 6 or 7. I guess it is high time for us to take our kids there, and
we will have to take a followup cruise next year, perhaps later in the year.

Can any of you fellow travelers recommend a hotel in Orlando that:

A) has a very nice pool (my wife's request)
B) has shuttle (or at least nearby trolley) access to the various theme
parks and the airport
C) a pretty decent breakfast
&
D) 80 bucks a night or less

We are going to fly in, and don't plan to rent a car. My wife wants
us to alternate busy days and "recharging" days during the roughly 9 day
trip. We already have tickets to Legoland Florida, and also plan on
going to Sea World and Disney World. Universal is also a slight
possibility, but we will probably wait until the next trip.

Since my wife and kids like to do a lot of swimming, and we plan on
being at the hotel for probably half of the trip, the quality and size
of the pool will make a big difference in how much she enjoys the trip.

You're in the wrong newsgroup. Rec.arts.disney.parks is likely to give
you much better info than a cruise newsgroup (although I acknowledge you
are not doing a primarily Disney trip). One thing I will say is that I
think that not getting a car is a bad idea. Car rentals in Florida are
pretty cheap and the ability to go where you want when you want is well
worth it (even if you choose to take a shuttle to the park to avoid
parking fees).

You can't do it all in only 9 days. There are several Disney parks and
you can't even do justice to them in 9 days ... especially with kids.
My suggestion is to just do Disney and stay on property. We stayed at
the Pop Century one time and All Star Sports (listed as their Value
Resorts) and were quite happy. It is a pretty basic hotel but, of
course, is Disney clean. Nice pools, excellent transportation to the
parks, airport transfers, a nice cafeteria ... everything we needed for
a comfortable stay.

You should also look at the basic meal plan as well. That will allow
you to eat in real restaurants for a good rate instead of just fast food
and that makes a BIG difference in how fast you get worn out. At the
time we got it, the rate was $36 per day per person and one of the
restaurants we went to had a lunch that was valued at $35 alone and we
still had several snacks, drinks and a light meal. Don't be tempted to
go with the deluxe meal plan unless you and your family are BIG eaters.
It is too hard to go through all the food that you are allotted. We
are big eaters and even with the basic plan, we ended up using a ton of
our snack credits in the gift shop for nuts and candies to bring home
for gifts.

The other choice is to skip Disney and do the other parks this trip.

The worst thing you can do is to try to do it all. We see that almost
every trip ... parents yelling at their worn out and cranky kids saying
something to the effect of, "We are in the happiest place on earth ...
have fun damn it!!"

sometimes have package specials that include meal plans.
