I seem to recall that Highway 395, north of Bishop, has a lot of aspens.
You won't get too much in the way of reds and oranges in California,
however. Even Washington State, where I live, has few maple species.

Yes, the Eastern Sierra would be my recommendation, too. I recall getting
some pretty photos in Rock Creek Canyon one day. It's about halfway between
Mammoth Lakes and Bishop.

Most trees in California are evergreen. The trees that turn color are
mainly black oak on the west slope of the Sierra, aspen on the east slope,
and bigleaf maple along the north coast and northern Sierra. Black oak
leaves tend to turn yellow or yellow-green, and not all at once, they turn
along their edges, then the color moves inward on the leaf, while the edge
is already brown. Not so impressive, but a large grove will show some
color. Aspens are probably your best bet, they'll turn all at once in a
grove, turn yellow to orange. Maples turn a nice yellow or even reddish,
but they grow as single trees in deep redwood or douglas fir forests.

Head up US395 is probably your best bet. There are poplars or cottonwoods
at the towns between Lone Pine and Bishop that might have some color, but
the aspens on the east slope of the Sierra will be the most impressive.
Mammoth and 120 on the way up to Yosemite are probably best. Still there's
nothing like the east.

Looks like it'll be a couple/three weeks before the real color show.
"Course, the poison oak's been turning since August.
