BA pilots suspended amid drink claims

Two British Airways pilots and a female cabin crew member have been
suspended after being arrested in Norway on suspicion of being under the
influence of alcohol.

They were arrested by airport police after other BA staff alerted them
to an "alleged breach of the airline's rules about alcohol consumption
before duty", the airline said.

The pilots - thought to be Captain William McAulliffe, 50, and first
officer David Ryan, 26 - were detained at Oslo airport on Tuesday
morning shortly before going on duty on a BA scheduled flight to the UK.

Also detained was a cabin crew member - thought to be purser Michele
Giannandrea, 48.

A BA spokesperson said: "All three members of staff have been suspended.
A formal disciplinary process has begun."

BA ...always stingy with the grog to the paying passengers. I
suppooose they have a habit to support behind the curtain.

QANTAS is not much better. They made me feel quite guilty after
swigging my third bottle of free libation after leaving a non
drinking country.

All pilots including SIA pilots should undergo breath-analyser tests prior
each flight and drinks to pilots to be tabulated and restricted.

Have you any hard reason to believe that SIA pilots are stronger on the
booze than most other airline's pilots? The BA pilots are infamous in this
regard. And drinking in Norway! They must have brought their own drinks with
them from Britain! Norwegians only get drunk when they leave the country
(ever been on a TG from CPH to Bangkok?) unless they have been brewing and
burning themselves that is!

I said "all pilots including SIA" and did not single out SIA - which is a
cross cultural opportunity employer.

A few other Asian airlines are the same. I have been greeted in Swedish once
on a internal TG flight from Bangkok to Puket. The pilot who crashed the Air
China MD11 a few years ago was from Italy and I know a few pilots of who are
not Chinese decent flying on both Dragon Air and Cathay. I wonder if the
pattern could be rather common among Asian airlines. Why then particular
SIA?

There was a BA pilot in our hotel in Prague that closed down the bar at
the Hilton when hubby and I were there (and said Captain was drinking
the hard stuff, nothing wussy like beer!)

as long as he stopped the appropriate amount of time before his report
(and I believe it's usually "eight hours from bottle to throttle"), so
what?
