Your Hotel Recommendation for New Orleans...?
 

Wow, this seems like a tough job (to get a good rate in the French
Quarter in New Orleans)! It's like booking a hotel in Europe!

Anyway, this is what I am looking for in a hotel:

1. Cheap (we usually stay at Best Westerns/Holiday Inns/La Quintas @
around $100).
2. Clean (no roaches, please!).
3. Quiet (don't want to be kept awake by partiers).
4. Safe (no first floor rooms!).
5. Space (We have a small child, so I need a place for his playpen
and for him to run around).

Preferred: Free Continental Breakfast and Cheap Parking (wassup with
the astronomical parking fees at French Quarter hotels?????).

Most of our trip will be walking tours of the French Quarter, so we
definitely will get a hotel there, but I need your HELP!

Your list of "requirements" will most likely force you to choose a
hotel NOT in the French Quarter.

I can recommend a hotel, just outside the french quarter, the LaSalle
on Canal Street. Two issues.

For Quiet you will want to specifically request a room away from Canal Street.
The rooms that face canal are soemwhat noisy.

Cheap Parking. Not even a possibility. Parking is at an increidible
premium in NOLA; when I go I fly and do not drive at all; if I want to travel
outside the city, I rent a car for a day or two, and return it upon
returning. If you're driving there you have no choice but o pay too much to
park.

Cheap parking

The only hotel I'm aware of in the French Quarter area that
has free parking is Le Richelieu. I've never stayed there
myself, but it looks like a nice place.

But as others have mentioned, a car really isn't a necessity
as there is good public transit. When we visit, we use public
transit and perhaps rent a car for one day if we wish to
visit anything outside the city like plantations.

I stayed in the Hotel Intercontinental right off the French Quarter (1
block) it is on St. Charles Street and was an absolutely beautiful hotel.
It only cost me 69/night. Not sure if you can still get that rate but that
is one of the nicest hotels in the area at a good price.

For decent parking try the medical center parking just up Canal street.

A bit run down and expensive for my taste. Some of the B&B's have
contract garage parking available. As I remember about $10/day.

Yeah, I was thinking that as I was typing this. No wonder it was such
a difficult search.

Perhaps maybe a better area would be nearby the French Quarter with
good transit access? That way I could save on the hotel and parking?

We stayed at the Royal St Charles on St Charles Street. It is 1 block from
the French Quarter and was very nice, quiet, with breakfast included. They
have valet parking.

Peace and Quiet and French Quarter do not go together.
