Dreaded Topic: Tipping
 

I guess this post is a couple months too late. But, I didn't come
across the review on a fairly popular travel website until today about
a doctor in San Mateo California. He wrote about his trip and stay to
the Riu Palace in Playa Del Carmen Mexico. For those that don't know,
this is the most expensive Riu hotel in the Yucatan.

I got really ticked off on how the reviewer started off his review in
the subject line: JUST TIP EVERYONE!! He also commented on how the
Europeans who stayed at the resort didn't tip and they didn't get good
service. He also ended the review to TIP EVERYONE.

Clearly, that doctor makes more money than the average person,
believes money grows on trees, and doesn't subscribe or has ignored
that at an AI resort, tipping is included!! I wouldn't be surprised
that this doctor is the kind of individual that would go on with his
prepaid vacation to SE Asia where the Tsunami hit saying that "Life
must go on".

As in most countries tipping is expected and considered rude if one
does not tip. It is true that an "Al" resort includes tips but there
is never anything wrong with showing ones appreciation for the services
rendered.

A little tip goes a long way. For instance, lets say you show up at an
overbooked hotel. A tip to bellman can get you a room. It also gets
him make sure that you are taken care of for the rest of your trip.

Incentives work for me so why wouldn't it work for the resort
employees? It truly does. I tip when I receive a drink and next time
I want something the friendly staff come to me first. You get what you
pay for.

At the risk of upsetting some people, I'll repeat one of my
"pet peeves"....
What you are describing is not a "tip", it is a "bribe".

A "tip" is money paid in appreciation for services provided.

A "bribe" is money paid in order to obtain better/preferential
treatment in the future.

Bribes ultimately result in employees looking for such paymens and
cause the overall level of service to decline. This is one of
the reasons many AI resorts specifically say "no Tips".
