It's great that Australia is helping African doctors to get the hell out of
Africa and come to Australia to work as taxi drivers. For a start there is little chance of catching AIDS and you can make a lot more money because your clients don't end up dead. Thank you Australia, the lucky country! |

So why does the government periodically have advertising campaigns trying to persuade long term permanent residents such as me to take out citizenship? Do I not exist? I am not an Australian. I am certainly eligible to become one. I see no point in paying the government money to become one. And what does this have to to with soc.culture.south-africa.afrikaans ? |

The only difference citizenship would make for me is that the government takes a fee off me and gives me a certificate, and they then charge me money for a passport instead of for a visa. I've been here since I was 5. I've seen nothing to make me attach any great importance to reciting pseudoreligious nonsense at a ceremony and getting a piece of paper for my effort. I won't wake up next morning a different person, I won't pay any more or less tax, I won't be more virtuous and my accent won't change. I am living proof that there ARE people who are neither Australians, nor particularly wish to be. Whether or not you have a problem with that, whether or not it's a morally defensible position, Michael Carr's claim is clearly incorrect. |

That "pseudoreligious nonsense" is your pledge to a society of which you are a member, and theirs to you. If you don't believe in it, leave it. Obviously Australia isn't worth your few dollars for its citizenship, so you should leave it. It would be better off without you. |

The Kiwis seem to dislike Australia and Aussies, but they plan never to return to NZ. I have known quite a few Kiwis in my time..but they neve rwant to leave..or become citizens. They take more than they give gra |

Oh dear, you're in a huff now because I don't value citizenship and ceremonies and fancy certificates which change nothing. |
