Polarizing ships, innocuous ships

Not just the cruise but the ships that are most polarizing are most
likely most, if not all, Carnival ships. What other ships are
polarizing? I think some of Celebrity's ships are, especially the
Mercury due to the art, the lack of obvious "pretty" areas, the decor.
Perhaps a classic ship that is love it or hate it is the Norway. Perhaps
some of HAL's latest efforts, especially the first, gets polarized
reactions.

Some innocuous ships are most of the ships of Princess and most of RCI's
ships, although many judge RCI ships most "beautiful".

You :)

I was thinking of how some people either love or hate the ship, very
strong positive or negative reactions. Some ships most like, some most
dislike. Some ships have qualities that bring out strong reactions, pro
or con.

This polarizing thing is contradictory to a mass marketing scheme. You
would think that CCL would attempt to find a more overall pleasing
approach.

Is it the "look and feel" of the ships that you believe is polarizing?
Here, I would agree.

Then again, Las Vegas sells; glitz, shiny shinies, sort of a relaxed
LSD experience.

I keep wondering what does this say about Americans in particular. Are
we basically a middle class(less) group who are driven by flashiness
and eye candy and sound bites?

What the hell am I thinking of.

Of course we are. Can you say General Hospital?

Ben:

I often wonder.. keeping in mind that most cruisers do not participate online
in any forum, newsgroup, etc...... really care about the looks of the ship in
the first place.

Cheap rates, lots of food... casinos which pay out....and entertainment....good
weather... congenial tablemates.....I think that's what most people are
interested in.
Oh.. and free upgrades.. LOL

The looks of a ship are very important to me, but certainly not more so
than the things you mention below.

Howie..... of course, they are.. to you.
But you are NOT just anybody.. and of course, you are a discriminating
cruiser!!

I've talked to so many people over the years... who have cruised.. who really
don't remember what ship they sailed... or even what the ship looked like.. and
have done several cruises... still not remembering.. they just know they had a
good time.

Conversely, there are those who will only cruise with one line. So.. all they
know is how that one line operates.. what it offers... what it doesn't. They
refuse to cruise with any other line. Without trying something else, they have
no basis to say such and such cruiseline is the best...because they cannot make
a comparison.

Frankly, I favor the decor of the Deutschland......but I don't pick a ship
based on decor. One of the best cruises I did was on the old Pacific
Princess.. and she certainly wasn't much to look at really.... but
oh.......everything else about the cruise experience was fabulous. The rate was
not inexpensive either. The weather was terrible........but still a terrific
cruise.

Have you cruised on the Deutschland? If so, have you written one of your
terrific reports? Is there a link? :-)

The Deutschland's decor is perfect for me, at least from all the beautiful
pictures I have found online via Google. She's really one of a kind.

I'm another ms Deutschland fan and I'd love to sail her again. One of
these days, I'd love to try one of Deilmann's European river boats, as
well.

I also think DEUTSCHLAND looks pretty fantastic. Unfortunately I don't
speak a word of German and since meeting new friends onboard ship is
important to me, I don't think DEUTSCHLAND is on my horizon. I think I
would feel alienated.

AURORA and ORIANA also have great appeal to me. I think they look lovely.
Someday I have to give them a try. Two other ships that look interesting,
and call me crazy, but DISNEY MAGIC and DISNEY WONDER. They have a lot of
the same art deco type interiors that I spotted in QM2. Unfortunately there
are too many kids which makes these ships undesirable for me.
