Best Time for Namibia

Hi everybody,
I am a first time traveller to Namibia. As I am just on the way to do
the travel arrangements I need to know first, what would be the best
time to go?!?
I plan to hire a car (read the discussion about 4x4 already :-) ) and
start a nearly 4 weeks round trip from Windhoek.
Some tour books recommand May or June. The travel agents, however,
charging the most on August. But I would guess you could make the most
out of the day travelling in summer time (Nov till Febr?)...?
Any ideas, please....
Best wishes, Jens

Daylight hours are not the issue in Southern Africa, especially Namibia
which is closer to the equator. I think you need to worry about the heat
more.

It's basicaly a matter of game viewing. You'll be more sucessful at that
during the winter months since the game will need to acess known
waterholes rather than being able to obtain water just about anywhere.
Other differences are about two hours daylight (less during winter) and
about 15 degCelcius increased summer temps.

Namibia in summer (approx Nov to Feb) is unbelievably hot in most
places. As a result, game viewing is more difficult, and it's
generally more unpleasant.

August is a good time of year, but so is May/June. It can get very
cold during the nights although days are temperate. Even in winter,
there is still at least 10.5 hours of daylight per day.

Marc

Hi Jens,

We visited Namibia during the months October/ November.
For Etosha (viewing wildlife) and other parts of Namibia in my opinion nice
months (later I don't advice; too hot)

Travelling in this period is too hot!I would recommend late autumn
(may/june) or late winter (early september)

Best Time for Namibia

Hi,

I have travelled in Namibia in most seasons including Winter
(June/July) and I would never go again in Winter.

Summer is hot, it is a hot country. It is meant to be hot. Late Summer
February/March is the equivalent to spring in that the rains bring new
growth, flowers, grass, and baby bok, etc.

During Winter, particularly late Winter the country becomes very bleak,
burnt and lacking in colour.

References about wildlife disappearing relate mostly to the Game Parks
and particularly to Etosha. In Etosha it is not permitted to follow the
game away from the tourist tracks.

In the communal lands the story is different, the game is still
dispersed but you can see it and if you have the right vehicle, and the
ability to drive it, you can see lots of wildlife.

In Summer it can rain, and hopefully it will, this is not a bad thing
although it can be a little inconvenient. It can also be quite
spectacular.

The big drawbacks about winter are the short days, and cold or freezing
nights. Namibia is big and the roads are long, if you keep normal lodge
hours you may not get going until after 9am and by 5pm it will be dark.
If you are camping you must start very early as you must make camp in
daylight. It makes for a rushed day.

I prefer to camp, and prefer to camp in the bush and this is not so
wonderful in Winter.

I have been up along the Angolan boarder in Summer and it is hot
particularly north of Etosha. This is no so good at night, it is more
pleasant out in the desert near or under the fog belt as the nights are
cool.

It is true that in the desert the middle of the day (12noon -3pm) can
be very hot and one must drink lots of water if you are outside, but it
does not feel so hot as it is dry and not sweaty. I remember a
searingly hot afternoon in early February walking amongst the dunes
near the Kunene in Hartmann's Valley, it was hot, the sun was
brilliant, it was also very beautiful.

There are two Namibia's, one that is parched, burnt and bleak and one
that is green, lush and vibrant. Personally I prefer the summer rains
to the winter dark.

Good Luck

and

Pray for Rain

Alex

Hi Jens,

Nov-Feb. is rainseason in southern Africa. It can be very hot (more then
40), especially in a desert country like Namibia. However, december and
january are also unstable with cloudy and cold (24) days. If you go in that
period you might be lucky to get lots of rain and see some rivers in flood,
or flowers in the desert.

Viel spass!

Corné.
