The Thomas Cook chartered flight from Glasgow skidded off the runway
as it came in to land at 7.10 this morning after experiencing
"problems with the undercarriage".

The Air Europa Boeing-737 jet had 74 people on board and came to a
halt near to a beach at the end of the runway. No-one was injured but
passengers were reportedly shaken by the incident.

They were evacuated quickly from the aircraft with the help of
emergency services.

A spokesman for the airline said: "There was a problem on landing. All
the passengers left the plane and are fine and are being taken to
their hotels."

The island's only airport was closed this morning while the plane was
removed causing travel chaos for hundreds of holidaymakers.

Planes expecting to land on Lanzarote were diverted to neighbouring
islands of Gran Canaria and Fuerteventura and all flights leaving the
holiday island were delayed.

A spokesman for Lanzarote Airport said on Friday morning: "The airport
runway is currently closed while the plane is being removed and
nothing is flying into or out of the airport at the moment.

"Planes that were already in the air en route to Lanzarote when it
happened will have been diverted to neighbouring airports. That is the
normal protocol in these situations."

An investigation into the incident has now been launched but it is
thought weather conditions may be to blame for destabilising flight
UX196 as it came into land.

The incident comes two months after a Spanair flight crashed on take-
off from Madrid airport, killing 154 people.
