Malarone ---- Cost.
We are going to Kenya for a visit of sixteen days this month, Malarone
was recommended as the prophylactic to take, I was surprised at how expensive it was, £63, I took the prescription to Superdrug chemists, what are other people`s experiences of the price of this drug? Thanks, Pat. -- Pat Anderson |

Thanks, Pat. -- Pat Anderson Check around. I underestimated my needs on my last trip and ran out in Egypt, after India and South-East Asia. I wandered London looking for a Chemist who would supply me without a prescription. None would - but the prices I was quoted before I discovered that were all between £34 and £40. I gave up eventually and just took a lot of care with DEET application and screened sleeping areas while wandering in Mexico later. Thanks, Pat. In SA it's only available on prescription, but a travel clinic should be able to do the consultation, prescription, and dispensing for around R500 - R600 which is about £33 - £40. The drugs themselves would go for about R350 - R400. I wonder if a South African pharmacy would dispense Malarone on a British doctor's prescription? Although, we call it Malanil here, and there are some pharmacies who will dispense without a prescription if you spin them a good enough story...I lost my tablets.... I'm staying for longer than anticipated, etc. |

Oops. I didn't register that you said you were going to Kenya before I
warbled on about Malanil in SA. |

Doxycycline offers the same level of protection - much more cheaply!
1 x 100 mg tablet daily from 1 day before exposure to 4 weeks after. Minor side effects:- increased sun sensitivity for 3% of users - work around - sun screen. Thrush for some female users - work around - clean COTTON underwear daily. Ideally taken after eating - and do not lie down for 30 minutes after taking. TOO EASY!!! Cost - cents per tablet almost anywhere in the world. Available as a generic - vibramyacin is the most common branded doxy! "Pat Anderson" wrote in message ... Hi Pat
Yes it is expensive, but I confess I use it every time I go to East Africa as it has absolutely no side effects (for me, and I believe pretty much everyone). You can certainly shop around on the 'net and there is a surprising variation in cost. I used Stratford pharmacy last time we went, and they are now charging £2.18 a pill. That would be around £52 for the 16 days (1 day before, 7 days after) http://www.stratford-pharmacy.co.uk/...il&productid=1 I am of course envious that you are going at all - didn't make it myself this year, and next year we are trying India. Have a great time and do report back on where you get to. Charles "Pat Anderson" wrote in message ... I use it in spite of increased sun sensitivity, but I've never had any issues about lying down after taking it. One MUST take it with food though or you will feel really rotten. I take mine after a meal before bed and I have no problems. |
