Summer weather in Bay Area
 

The San Francisco area tends to be hottest in Sept/Oct. Why is that,
since most places in the US are hottest in June - August? Is it just
the wind coming from the SW?

I just moved to LA and discovered the term June gloom - apparently
June tends to be overcast here. The past few days the high here was
99!

I also lived in the midwest once and June-Aug also was the hottest and
also had thunderstorms in the night.

If you mean San Francisco itself it's to do with the temperature difference
between the ocean and the bay which draws cold air in through the Golden
Gate. At other times of the year the temperature difference is not so
marked. The Peninsular cities on the bay side tend to have rather nice
Summers, however, the other side (e.g. HMB) can be distinctly foggy and
chilly at times. I can remember arriving at SFO late PM and watching the
cloud trying to get over the ridge but being beaten back by the rising heat
from the Bay.

My favorite is driving along the ridge between Oakland/Berkeley and
the "Lamorinda" area at certain times of year, when the Diablo Valley
is under a fog blanket and it's crystal clear over the Bay -- just the
opposite of the stereotype.
