Does the opening of the Gotthard Base Tunnel mean the closure
of the present (apparently spectacular) rail route through the
Alps?

A 57-km ride through a hole in the ground doesn't appeal very
much.

How much longer will the old line be open for, if it's going
to be superseded?

I don't know, but when they opened the Lötschberg Base Tunnel the
old (and pretty spectacular) Lötschberg route remained open with
one or two trains an hour to serve points along it. So there's
reason to hope for the same thing at Gotthard.

It serves loads of local stations, surely they aren't going to close them

whether the timings will make a viable through journey is another matter
