Best City Sydney loses out to Melbourne .. world's most liveable city
Australian cities occupy five of the top 20 places in a British survey
ranking the liveability of 140 of the world's major centres. Melbourne
ranked third in the world, behind Vancouver in Canada and the Austrian
city of Vienna in the Economist Intelligence Unit's 2009 Liveability
survey. It assessed 140 cities based on stability, health care,
education, infrastructure and culture and environment, giving each one
a rating out of 100. Perth was equal fifth with Calgary in Canada,
with Sydney sharing ninth place with Zurich in Switzerland and
Brisbane in 16th place.

Job rate holds up as employers cut hours THE labour market is holding
up better than expected, but there has been a sharp increase in the
number of workers unhappily accepting fewer hours. Since November,
the percentage of the workforce without a job or wanting more work has
risen from 11 per cent to 13.4 per cent, the Bureau of Statistics

Crackdown on education providers in wake of student attacks PROTESTS
in the wake of attacks on international students have forced a
national quality crackdown on education and training providers to
shore up the reputation of Australia's $15.5 billion educ. Education
Minister Julia Gillard also announced another taskforce as it ratchets
up its response to the attacks that have attracted international news
coverage and sparked street protests. The Ministerial Council on
Education, Employment, Training and Youth Affairs in Hobart today
agreed to urgently carry out targeted audits of education and training

Education sector needs Senate Inquiry: Greens The Australian Greens
have pushed for a full Senate enquiry following a fortnight of tension
in the international student community over ongoing issues with
safety. The party’s spokesperson for education, Senator Sarah Hanson-
Young, says the issues facing international students are challenges
the Government must tackle head-on. “A Senate Inquiry is needed to
get all the information on the table from students themselves,
universities, and others in the sector, to determine the best way
forward for our booming international education industry – our third
largest export behind iron ore and coal.”

Chk-chk bigotry boom WE'VE had post-Cronulla hand-wringing, the post-
apology warm glow and now the post- Werbeloff confused head scratch.
The wannabe starlet has left a clear battle line in her wake, between
those who say everything is fine with the state of our
multiculturalism and those who reckon the tyres need checking. The
protests over violence against Indian students in Australia and former
Telstra boss Sol Trujillo's snipe accusing Australians of racism have
added fuel to the fire. Who to believe? For the most part, the media
and politicians keep telling us: "Nothing to see here, move on." But
the old cultural battlegrounds, the ones we thought we'd left behind,
look to have resurfaced. They've resurfaced with the "we grew here,
you flew here" generation, flying the flag on Australia Day and the
Southern Cross tattoo. They've resurfaced, too, with a never before
seen array of accents and ethnicities donning the green and gold at a
Socceroos' match. Australia is recalibrating its sense of self.
