I have the opportunity of staying at UCLA in California for a week in July
(for free).

But the cost of flying from the UK (where I live) to Los Angeles is very
high.

What is the cheapest way for me to get to LA from the UK?

July and August is the time when the Airlines can sell all of their seats,
so bargains will be non-existent.

Probably a package holiday flight to Las Vegas, then get a bus.

At that time of year it's going to be expensive. I looked it up for
someone else and it was tricky getting a return fare much below £650
(inc tax).

check Air New Zealand - from LAX to London (Heathrow), they are quoting USD
$530. That's about UKP 275. I assume they have the same deal ex London.

For July, when he wants to travel??
Nope.
It is for May 1-29 and it says "FROM"

And it is (on their UK website) not being advertised in the reverse
direction.

£567 (inc taxes) Delta out of Gatwick, change in Atlanta

£554 (inc taxes) AA out of Heathrow change in Chicago from STA you would need
