The sheep on the Cormo Express, stranded in the Persian Gulf for a month, are in good condition with about two weeks' supply of food remaining on board, said the ship's Australian vet, Martin Robertson. The cargo of more than 53,000 sheep had been saved by the weather, Mr Robertson said: "August is normally the hottest month in the Middle East and we've had very mild weather, which has saved the animals." But he feared the situation could continue unresolved for another month, putting the animals at risk. More than 4000 sheep have died since the Cormo Express left Fremantle on August 5 and the Australian Government is searching for a country to accept them after the original destination, Saudi Arabia, rejected the shipment on health grounds. The United Arab Emirates and Pakistan have also refused it. Mr Robertson said he viewed the option of slaughtering the sheep at sea, as proposed by some animal welfare groups, as a last resort that he would find traumatic. "[The worst possible case] would be an on-board slaughter from an industry point of view and an animal welfare point of view," he said. In Portland, in western Victoria, about 50 protesters in boats and canoes yesterday prevented the vessel Al Kuwait from docking to collect 35,000 sheep destined for the Middle East. The ship sat anchored about 4 kilometres from the dock while port authorities and police waited for Melbourne Water Police to arrive in the hope of bringing the ship back into the harbour. The protesters, who are mainly from Animal Liberation Victoria and the Victorian Greens, maintained a vigil at the dock throughout the afternoon. Bad weather eventually prevented any attempt at redocking, and the ship is expected to attempt to reach shore again this morning. The head of livestock exporters' industry body LiveCorp, Kevin Shiell, said the protesters should not be allowed to prevent the sheep being exported.
