Isn't it interesting that the countries with the largest oil reserves
are the ones that are planning for a future without oil, while the rest
of the world blunders onwards as if there were tomorrow.

Saudi tourism as 'planning for the future'- this in a country which
still can't decide whether or not to allow women to sell women's
underwear to other women? Yeah, right.

Seems to me the rest of the world is looking for oil alternatives
and trying them out while the Saudis have barely woken up to not
training medieval religious fanatics.

That's the thing, we can disdain the Saudi's plans for the future but
what kind of lifestyle will we have without cheap oil?

Certainly intercontinental travel might become something that only the
wealthy can afford.

It seems to me its the pollution that's a bigger hurdle than the
fuel.

I think that was his point (though I don't take offense at that kind of
thing in this context) but as I'm not sure why making fun of a mass
gathering of (mostly) men is bigotted per se and I haven't made a single
comment about muslims in this thread (not all muslim countries impose
the form of sharia law I mentioned in the 'underwear' post FWIW) it
struck me as odd that he decided to go down this route.

That's a relief - I was concerned that my ideas about shirt-lifters
might be just ignorant bigotry.

You can have whatever ideas you want, but my comments about the haj
aren't about bigotry. If you want to name other similar events (I can
think of at least one, and it's nothing to do with muslims) I'll make
similar comments about them too.

And yet the one you CHOSE to comment on, complete with stereotypes of
Muslims, was the haj.

If we can diversify the types of fuel we use, the pollution issue
shouldn't be such a problem. It's the almost sole use of fossil fuels
that causes the imbalance.
