Super Jumbo Takes Off Using 'Green' Fuel

The Airbus A380, the world's largest passenger aircraft, has become
the first commercial plane to fly on "green" fuel.

The super-plane is flying from the UK to France on a synthetic fuel,
developed using gas to liquid (GTL) technology.

plane, which seats 555 passengers, took off for a three-hour test
flight between Filton, in Bristol, and Toulouse.

Sjoerd Post, vice president of Shell Aviation, which developed the
fuel, said he hoped the plane would eventually run on even greener bio-
fuels made from sustainable plant matter.

But according to projections released by Airbus, that would be by 2020
at the earliest.

Mr Post said: "After more than 30 years of development and a decade of
operations, we are now building, together with Qatar Petroleum, the
world scale Pearl GTL plant in Qatar.

"In our drive for cleaner fuels, GTL technology can help reduce local
emissions and encourage sustainable mobility."



Airbus president and CEO Tom Enders said: "Fuel and energy are key
challenges aviation is facing and for which technology and
international research collaboration open up new horizons.

"Our alternative fuels roadmap requires innovation, diversity of ideas
and options that need to be explored."

Sebastien Remy, head of Airbus' alternative fuels programme, said:
"The age of easy energy is over."

Mr Remy said GTL was better than traditional kerosene jet fuel because
it did not deplete the world's oil supply.

It produces less emissions of local pollutants, like carbon monoxide,
and hydrocarbons, and is virtually free of sulphur.

Airlines aren't doing so great with the current fuel prices they pay.

A small correction to the Sky story, only one of the four engines used
'green fuel', all four on a test flight being considered somewhat
risky..

I think the interest of the thing is perhaps less the cost of the fuel
but rather more the independence it gives, no more relying on unstable
oil-producing countries and constantly fluctuating prices.
