"Apex car rental" NZ - opinions????

Hi

My wife and I (from the UK) are planning a trip to NZ in the Autumn.
I used to work for "New Zealand Shipping Company" many, many years ago
and want to re-visit my old haunts before I get too old - could be a
mistake taking the wife though, in case I am still recognised!! 8^)

The flights are booked and we are currently looking at car rental, our
route being solely North Island; Wellington to Auckland. I have come
across "Apex car rental", which have a professional looking website
(proves nothing I know) and seem very cheap compared to some of the
more well known (here in the UK) car rental companies.

Any comments about Apex - good or bad - would be greatly appreciated.
If bad, any other suggestions for car rental companies??

I have tried looking at http://www.rental-cars.co.nz as suggested in
this NG some time ago but the website appears to be now defunct.

Regards - and thanks in advance

Several years ago I used Ace car rentals in New Zealand and found them fine.
About half the cost of the major international firms. Many of these local
car rental companies in NZ import good condition low mileage second hand
cars from Japan, and rent them out. So you won't get a brand new car.
Expect a four - five year old car in good order.

These are the guys we used in "OZ". I see they re in NZL too. They had
good prices and little or no "one way" penalty.

Rental rates on cars about 4 years old (still in good shape) were excellent,
probably 50% of "new", cars or campers

Any comments about Apex - good or bad - would be greatly appreciated.

Another thing to remember about Australia/New Zealand car rentals is
that your Stateside insurance is invalid there.

Check with your credit card company if they offer car rental insurance
in Oceania -- some do.

Hi

Thanks for the replies - but as the original poster I feel I should
point out that:-

A) As stated in my original post, I am from the UK (not the United
States).

B) Insurance is not the issue, my query was whether Apex car rental is
a reputable company - I have since discovered that they have a licence
to operate in Auckland Airport so presumably they do actually exist.
Incidentally I do NOT know of any UK credit cards which offer car
insurance in foreign parts.

B) Here in Great Britain we do drive on the other side of the road!!!
(Actually it is the correct side of the road - it is [most of] the
rest of the World which is out of step). 8^)

Hi,
I did a trip to the South Island Last October and used Ace Rentals
which I was really happy with.
They are a big company, have been around for a while and their prices
are very good. Like most car rental companies they have a depot just
outside the airport and will pick you up in a shuttle bus when you
arrive and take you to the depot to do the paperwork. Likewise they
will drop you off at the airport after returning the car.
This is to get around the high charges that the airport authorities
impose on the car rental companies, which of course gets passed on to
the customer.
Ace Rentals head office is in Auckland. You should be able to find
their website with Google.
Enjoy your trip.

We're just back from NZ - some facts you might find interesting.

There are a number of companies renting 4 or 5 year old Japanese cars - in
good condition, either manual or automatic, with a/c.

We paid $37NZD per day. (Kiwi Direct Rentals - but others have similar cars
and rates).

Insurance is included (as by law it must be in NZ), with a 'deductible' or
'excess' of $300 to $500 NZD - which you can cover with a small extra
payment.

Personal Insurance is not needed as NZ runs a 'no fault' State compensation
regime for personal injury, including car accidents.

Driving is easy, roads OK - but NZ's car accident rate is higher than most
western countries, and drivers are lax about signalling lane changes or even
turns. They are also prone to 'tailgate'. GPS are available for hire also.
Signage is generally good.

Fuel costs in late February, 2009 - $1.65 a litre for standard 91RON
unleaded petrol. Diesel was about $1.10 NZD per litre.

Hope this info is not too late for you.
