Use of credit cards in Japan

Smaller Japanese businesses usually do not accept credit cards. Even larger
ones prefer cash. Tourist hotels etc will generally accept them.

colected tickets when we got to Hong Kong - paid when we got to Beijing. I

The simple answer - not always, nor easily.

ATMs in Japan will generally only accept domestic cards. The exceptions -
the foreign bank ATMs...
