If the ship lost power the Captain could have radioed for tugs to bring
the ship to port

It was so close to shore ... there was a lot that could have been
done ...

If it was human error- unacceptable

IMO - That is the only acceptable cause ... I could accept some idiot
screw up much easier than a systematic cause or errors in the
navigational charts ...

The Captain and crew abandoning the ship will be prosecuted.

If I recall there was another sinking not that long ago ... where the
entertainer actually led the passengers into life boats when the crew
left early ...

Unfortunately, for Carnival when the Captain and other officers are
convicted, the courts will pay out millions to the families of the dead
and injured passengers.

I don't know how Italian law is ... One must not assume there as many
ambulance chases due to a society enamored with litigation ...

Costa is located in Genoa, not too far from the scene of the accident.
The executives should have been at the scene handing out money and
getting releases. *At least money for the price of the trip plus airfare
plus clothing and personal items plus a certificate for their next
cruise on any brand that Carnival owns could save millions.

Free bottle of wine and a shore excursion on their next cruise ...

Monday morning the Today show and all the other shows will have victims
(and their lawyers) blowing the accident and how they were treated out
of proportion costing Carnival Billions and giving all those who are too
cheap to take their families on a cruise a good excuse not to.

That will only benefit the dedicated cruiser ...

The Concordia will be repaired at a cost of 100 million+and will get a
new name.

Congress will propose all kinds of new laws (to protect us) from the
dangerous cruise industry and tie up the industry in red tape that will
increase costs of cruising and ruin a good thing for us.

We're from the government and we're here to help - scarier than any
horror movie ...
The rules in effect now are indeed mostly holdovers from the
Titanic ... back when laws were made reasonable and to correct actual
rather than perceived or possible or imagined
deficiencies ...Potentially, we'll be sleeping with scuba gear now ...
just in case ...

Short term there will be bargains (I should have waited to pay for my
next cruise). *Long-term will be negative, with cruise lines putting on
a show to make passenger think they are safe..

I can just see Costa prices now ... I'll check Northern European
cruises where they can hit icebergs rather than rocks ... to see if
there'll be something very cheap ...
Though it would have to be very cheap as Costa and MSC cruise
experiences are way down the list ...

rate from a ship sinking like that can be considered a blessing ...
