Default suggestions for road trip from DC

In October you might catch some of the fall foliage. Try to get a
drive out to the Shenendoah Valley. A drive on Skyline Drive would be
nice.

You could drive part of the way out 211, visit some of the sights on the
Mosby Heritage Area, and learn some Civil War History. (Note the Mosby
Heritage Area is NOT just in the 211 area, I suggest this as a route to
accomodate other places, and because it is such a pretty drive)

Information is at
http://www.mosbyheritagearea.org/

While you are there, you could visit some wonderful Virginia Wineries,
especially Grey Ghost, Oasis, or if you go further north, Crysalis, Loudoud
Valley, Tarara, Breaux. More info at

http://www.virginiawines.org

You could visit Luray Caverns in Luray Virginia, which the kids would
probably enjoy quite a lot.

Then head south on Skyline drive to the Charlottesville area where you
can visit Monticello, and a number of attractions. If you head back
through the center of the state, you could come via Richmond (which has
several good muesums including a children's museum.) and pass Kings Dominion,
for a day at a theme park (always a good idea with kids).

Also, the suggestion for Hampton Roads area does not have to limit you to
Williamsburg or include Beaches. Hampton Roads has a great maritime museum,
and you can visit the port of Norfolk ans see how a port works.
