For your time at WDW, that is probably the best. Disney transport can
get you to most things in the park. But only most, several of the
smaller "things" don't have bus/ferry/monorail service.

Or is rental home with pool nearby best bet

How long to stay for, what else is worth visiting nearby

For -us- a 4 day pass was enough. We stayed three extra days to rest
and see Kennedy Space Center. Of course that might be different for you.
