Default Manhattan hotels

Hi,

We're going to be in NYC for a few days next summer (July) and it
seems that finding a "decent priced" room is going to be difficult.
Since we'll be arriving on a saturday afternoon it seems the prices
will even be higher that during weekdays. We looked at hotels just
accross the bridges/tunnels in NJ or LI but modest priced hotels don't
have subway or bus stops nearby (I guess that's why they're decent
priced :-) ).

Several NJ motels are close to bus stops or the PATH subway.

Here's a list.

We drove North Bergen one time. The motels
listed below were pretty respectable looking.

Prices may be a few $ higher today.

Comfort Suites North Bergen Walking distance to NYC bus $84.99
[$10 more Fri-Sat]

Howard Johnson N Bergen Walking distance to NYC bus $47.99
[$30 more weekends]

Super 8 N Bergen Bus to NYC outside door of motel $59.99

Holland Motor Lodge Jersey City Walk to PATH subway $64.99
[Inc fridge/microwave]

Econo Lodge Jersey City Walking distance to NYC bus $51.99

Free Parking at all.

If driving, pick up Traveler Discount Guide on the way
for coupons to get above room prices.

If flying into Newark you can use the PATH system to get there.

You can also check them out with a Google search.

Pro for Manhattan hotels: everything is closeby
Contra: expensive

Pro "off Manhattan: lower price
Contra: daily commute on taxi/public transport, less convenient.

Anyone with suggestions on modest priced hotels in Manhattan?
We are looking for Hampton Inn / Holiday Inn Express category.

Thanks in advance.
