Default Independent travel in the Lake Nasser area

I live in cairo and am considering spending some upcoming vacation
time in the Lake Nasser area, something about the nubian cheer, the
expanse of the lake, and the calm attract me.

Does anyone have any experience in independent travel in these parts?
There is not much info on the internet regarding this area, except
packages tours that cater for fishing safaris, historical tours and
luxury cruises with onboard jacuzzis. None of which are not what I'm
looking for.

What I am looking for is closer to a village in the southern reaches
of the lake where I could hire a small boat to take me northwards to
aswan, maybe stop in at a couple of points along the way, clambor
around ancient ruins of lesser importance, truly egypt.

Anyone know how long it would take to travel the 500 odd kilometers
(around 300 miles) in a small boat?

Anyone with stories of independent travel in these parts, please share
them with me.

any info welcome

thanks
