I have yet to find a decent map of India, or even a GPS map that'll run on
anything decent.

The Indian government seems strangely reluctant to allow its maps to be sold
in an electronic form for reasons nobody can understand. Probably just the
usual ghastly government inertia caused by some babu not wanting to make a
decision...
