I have yet to find a decent map of India, or even a GPS map that'll run
on anything decent.

The Indian government seems strangely reluctant to allow its maps to be
sold in an electronic form for reasons nobody can understand. Probably
just the usual ghastly government inertia caused by some babu not wanting
to make a decision...

Ehm! There are a few mapping tools of free use. For instance Google Earth
and Google maps. Both of them covers much of India to a scale to cover
streets in detail (not all over India). More over, both tools support
databases which locate everything a tourist wants to see and experience. And
a lot which is not of common interest. Those maps are scarce which generate
approriate routes between any given points and provide guidance at every
turning point. However, GPS navigation is still a great help in India.
