Is that the same system that allowed the 9/11 hijackers to
waltz through with their box-cutters?

Yes. What of it?

Secure the cockpit doors, then when a hijacking occurs, land the plane
at the nearest airport and have SWAT deal with the problem.

A lot of people can die in a situation like the one you describe.
It is a lot better to try to head off such a confrontation before
it happens.

This is true, but so what?

A lot of people can die if someone takes a gun to a busy shopping mall
or sporting event, or cuts a dozen cars' brakes all on one day, or goes
after a passenger rail service.

Once you secure the cockpit doors (removing the potential for a hijack,
and the potential to use the plane itself as a weapon), there's nothing
uniquely special or interesting about a plane that makes it a fun place
to stab/shoot/annoy people.

If terrorists take control of the passenger area, then the pilot
is held hostage just as if the terrorist were in the main cabin.

How so? Land, let swat deal with it.

Sure, a crazy might start killing. Or they might start killing if the
pilot does what they're told.

If "they" are not searched, explosives, edged weapons, guns
can control the airplane, no matter whether these ****heads
gain access to the cabin or not.

Only if the captain chooses to allow such action. Captains need to be
trained to do otherwise, as they already are.

If you dont like security, take a bus.

Isn't that pretty much what air travel is these days?

What exactly is so special about air travel that requires any more
security than a bus?
