Yes. Up to four free transfers are stored on the card at a time. Thus
you swipe it twice (i.e., first person hands it back to second person)
when the two of you get on the subway, and dip it once when you change
to the bus.

Or, you dip it twice when you get on the bus and dip/swipe it once
when you change to the bus/subway.
