Default Taxes in Canada and USA

(H J Angus) wrote in message

I will be spending a few days in Canada and the USA.
Need some general info on the taxes payable in the 2 countries.

Specific areas of travel are Ontario, Nova Scotia, Pennsylvania, New
York City, Virginia, Washington.

Taxes related to hotels, food and transport cannot be avoided.
If you are going to spend money on clothing, gifts and entertainment,
where would you get the best value for money in terms of overall price
to be paid?

In USA:

- There is no general national sales tax. Sales tax is a state
matter. It ranges from zero to seven percent. Some state allow local
governments to add a second tax on that, some do not. So the real
spread is from zero to eleven percent.

Some states tax everything, some exempt clothes, some exempt food.

Many locations charge an extra tax on rental cars, hotel rooms and
other tourist-type stuff.

A chart of US state sales taxes is available at
www.taxadmin.org

In Canada:

There is a combined national and provental sales tax, but foreign
visitors can get it refunded. Save receipts.
