Those of you in Australia seem to get the short end of the stick when it
comes to consumer banking. There are dozens, and probably hundreds, of banks
in the US offering no-fee worldwide ATM withdrawals.

Canada too, at least among the major chartered banks. Competition is
limited in their oligopoly position, so they get to be big fish in a
small pond, and make (literally) billions in profits each every year.
Foreign banks such as HSBC might be better, but they have a fraction
of the branches (the big 5 or so banks are everywhere) so you would
end up paying more fees domestically to withdraw money.
