Egyptian airliner crashes into sea
An Egyptian charter plane has crashed
into the Red Sea, killing all 148
passengers and crew on board, Egyptian
aviation and airline officials say.

The plane, belonging to Egypt charter company Flash
Airlines, crashed shortly after take-off at 0244 GMT
from the resort of Sharm el-Sheikh.

All the passengers were thought to be French
tourists on their way back home.

Wreckage has been found in the sea about 15
kilometres (nine miles) south of the resort, officials
said.

Relatives

"All people who were aboard the plane are dead," Osama
al-Sayed, a senior official with the airline, told
reporters.

The emergency services were alerted when the
plane, a Boeing 737, disappeared from radar screens
shortly after take-off.

Egyptian search and rescue teams in boats and
helicopters have found wreckage strewn along the
coastline near Sharm el-Sheikh, including the main
body of the plane.

They have begun recovering bodies from the water.

There were 135 passengers and 13 crew members on
board the flight which was on its way to Cairo for a
stopover and crew change before heading on to
Paris, Charles de Gaulle airport.

French airport officials were comforting friends and
relatives in Paris who were waiting for the plane.
