There are 3 ways of getting to Venice from the airport:
1) taxi (by water): most expensive
2) bus (on road) to the railways station then taxi or bus (by water)

Isn't there a train from the airport?

3) regular connection by water: like a bus

It depends where your hotel is. Ask them how far is the nearest bus stop.
