I don't know if they will take the cash and put it on your onboard

They do NOT refund any monies left in your account after the cruise. If
you have any onboard credits you either use them or lose them.

I'm sure they will refund any monies other than "nonrefundable credits".
Therefore, if Marsha would deposit cash and not spend it all, she would get
back the balance. As others have suggested, using cash rather than a card is
cumbersome.

Sometimes you get on-board credit instead of a refund, and sometimes
you have other types of on-board credit like for owning stock or for
booking while you were taking a preceding cruise. For on-board
credit, you use or you lose.

Not true, at least not on Celebrity and/or RCL. There are refundable credits
and nonrefundable credits. Your online (cabin tv) account will show an "R"
or an "N" on the line with the amount credited.

For cash that you put against the tips/service charges or whatever
else you spend, you'd get the excess back.

Which is what Marsha asked about. The cruise line would really have to hate
their customers to do what Doris implied.
