Of course, that's on roads that are traveled. Out west, and
especially in blasted hellholes like west Texas, if you get off the
interstates you can easily find stretches of road where you can see
30--40 miles, and see that there aren't any cars. Then, you're
pretty safe going as fast as your car and the road surface will bear.

That is also why you should have basic supplies in the car with you -

water
and snacks in a small cooler, tissue ;-) and a cell phone. You can go

for
miles with no place to purchase a drink, and heaven forbid that you break
down.

sounds like bitter experience - i do rely on the AA here - pick you up when
you break down - i've been promised a lovely road from Sna Antonio to El
Paso that i'm looking forward to - there must be a few gas stops in 500
miles! - but lots of water might be a good idea - can you recommend any
stops....
