The boarding pass you print on your printer has bar codes, which are
read by the scanner at the gate. The agent at the gate will check
your ID if you print your own boarding pass.

We flew AA last month and printed the boarding passes. On the return
trip, we had to go through some hassle to get it printed.
Both ways, when we checked our luggage at curbside, we were given
another boarding pass even though we presented the ones we had. Bar
codes and all.
