My mobility limitation has become so severe that, on my last trip, I
needed a wheelchair to take me from check-in to the departure gate at
the airport. At the gate I tipped the wheelchair attendant. My
traveling companion said that it was not necessary to tip her. I know
that I did not have to tip her but I'm wondering what the convention
is.

It depends on the Country in which you live or to which you are travelling.
I got a lot of assistance at LAX recently, arriving from LHR, and tipped the
wheelchair attendant US $20. On the return journey at LHR I tipped GBP £5. I
got the impression on both occasions that this was about the correct
expected level of remuneration

In this day and age when lower paid people are hurting,
if you have the dough, tip to the max when the service has been
to your satifaction.
