A problem is the attitude of backpackers who arrive in Thailand (or
other developing countries) and expect to pay almost nothing for
everything and are proud when they manage to drive down prices below
economical levels, without realising that the people who provide the
service also have to make a living.

Exactly. Thailand is one of the worst places for that sort of people,
KS road one of the most disgusting places in Asia.

Seems like a lot of thais disagree with you on that.
An increasing number of young hip thais seem to take a fancy to this area
much more so than in the past when just about the only thais you`d spot in
this area were the ones working there.

Good to see someone here who knows what he's talking about, unlike
those who apparently haven't been to KSR for many years.

Some of the pubs there nowadays are almost exclusively filled with
Thais, mostly young couples enjoying themselves. A good example is
Susie Pub, which was jam packed with Thai people last time I was there
with still more queuing up outside to get it. If the prices charged
are anything to go by, it was a fairly well-to-do crowd as well.

I think it started a few years back when a few Thai people started
going there out of curiosity, just to see what this place that
attracts so many farangs was all about. It kind of caught on and
became something of a trendy area for Thais to hang out at.
