Default Plymouth to Santander

I've never really understood why anyone would want to spend nearly two
days on a ferry to get six hours worth of shopping in Santander!
Yes, they probably do have some kind of siesta, which is usually about
13.00-16.00 (although don't expect Spanish shops to reopen on time!)
The further North you are in Spain, and the bigger the city, the more
likely things are to be open so Santander is likely to be more liberal
than much of Spain. Major national chains like supermarkets and department
stores (El Corte Ingles/FNAC) will stay open. Some of the trendy fashion
chains may stay open. Most independent businesses (which still make up a
majority of shops in Spain) will close. This may be different around the
ferry port itself, particularly if there is a regular supply of day
trippers. There will be plenty of food places, although they might be
busy.
Always worth checking for local holidays as well - many towns close
completely on their saints day for example. (Nov 1 = All Saints for a
start).
